Observation vs. Inference - Student Experience

In looking back at my previous post, I would categorize my description of the rock in the following way (this assumes that I'm actually able to touch and manipulate the rock):

Observations:
color
texture
streak
hardness
scent
vinegar test results

Inferences:
density
age
location found
how the rock formed
what the rock is made from

  1. Hi Errin,
    When students first begin this unit, they do not know what properties to measure. You have much background here and experience and have some good properties listed. By the end of the unit, students should be able to tell more about their rock...sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous, how it formed,etc...
